12 Questions to Ask Before You Hire a DJ for Your Wedding or Event

Your DJ does a lot more than play songs. They control the energy of the whole room. They run the timeline, make the announcements, read the crowd, and keep the night moving. The right DJ makes your event feel effortless. The wrong one is the thing your guests remember for the wrong reasons. I've been DJing since 2009. I got a solid foundation in the business working with Rock the House, I've played sold-out shows at the Agora and House of Blues Cleveland, I was the resident DJ at Cocky's Bagels in the Flats, and I'm currently the official DJ for Cleveland Vibes. Here are the questions I'd want every couple and event planner to ask before they sign with anyone, including me.
“1. Are You Available on My Date, and Can We Lock It in Writing?”
Start here. If they're not available, nothing else matters. If they are, ask what it takes to officially hold your date. Usually it's a signed contract and a deposit. A verbal "you're good" is not a booking.
“2. How Many Weddings or Events Like Mine Have You Done?”
A great club DJ isn't automatically a great wedding DJ, and the other way around. Weddings require MC skills, timeline management, and the ability to play for your grandma and your college roommates in the same hour. Ask about experience with your specific type of event.
“3. Can I See Video From a Past Event?”
Reviews are helpful, but video shows you how a DJ actually works a room: how they talk on the mic, how they transition, and how the crowd responds. Ask for references from past clients too.
“4. Will You Be the DJ Who Actually Shows Up?”
Many DJ companies have multiple DJs on staff. That's not a bad thing, and a good company will have great DJs across the board. But you should know exactly who will be at your event, and you should get to talk with that person before the day.
“5. How Do You Handle Requests & a Do-Not-Play List?”
Can you give them a must-play list? Will they honor a do-not-play list, even if a guest asks for one of those songs? How do they handle guest requests in general? The answers tell you a lot about how they'll protect your vision.
“6. What Does the Planning Process Look Like?”
Ask how you'll communicate before the event and how many planning conversations are included. For weddings, you'll want to go over your timeline, grand entrance, first dance, special dances, toasts, cake cutting, and the last song of the night.
“7. Will You MC, and What's Your Style?”
Some DJs are high energy on the mic. Others are subtle and only talk when they need to. Neither is wrong, but one is probably right for you. Make sure their style matches the vibe you want.
“8. What's Included in Your Package?”
Ask exactly what you're paying for. Does it cover sound for the ceremony and cocktail hour, or just the reception? Wireless microphones for toasts? Dance floor lighting? Uplighting? Setup and breakdown time? Get a clear list so you can compare DJs fairly.
“9. What's Your Backup Plan If Something Goes Wrong?”
Equipment fails. Cars break down. People get sick. A professional DJ has backup gear on site and a plan for a replacement DJ in an emergency. If they don't have an answer for this, keep looking.
“10. Do You Carry Liability Insurance?”
Many venues require vendors to have liability insurance and to provide a certificate of insurance before the event. Check with your venue, then confirm your DJ can meet that requirement.
“11. What Do You Need From the Venue?”
Ask how much space they need, how many power outlets, how early they need to arrive to set up, and whether they've worked at your venue before. If they have, even better. They'll already know the room.
“12. What Are the Payment Terms, Overtime Rate & Cancellation Policy?”
Get the full picture in writing: the deposit, when the balance is due, what it costs if the party runs long, and what happens if either side has to cancel. A clear contract protects both you and your DJ.
“What Does a Wedding DJ Cost?”
Prices depend a lot on your market, the length of the event, and what's included. As a general range, many professional wedding DJs charge somewhere between $1,000 and $3,500, with experienced DJs in busy markets often going higher once lighting, ceremony sound, and extra hours are added. As with anything, the cheapest option isn't always the best value. Your DJ is shaping the experience for every single guest.
“The Bottom Line”
The best DJ for your event is the one who listens, plans, and shows up prepared to make the room feel like your night. Ask these questions, trust your gut, and get everything in writing. If you're planning a wedding or event in Cleveland or anywhere in Northeast Ohio and you want a DJ who's going to treat your night like it matters, tell me about it on my Work With Me page. Let's make it unforgettable.
